KLINGON ANIMALS, #4, --- The Klongat...

Found in the wilder areas of Ketha Province, near and on Kang's Summit and in the Tlhingtu Mountains, the klongat is larger than a Targ and likes to hunt at night. It truly doesn't look like any earth creature, but it has a pre-historic appearance and the disposition of an exceptionally crazed Terran wolverine. Klongats are most active in the colder months and they love to roam in blizzards, for some strange reason. They have long retractable razor sharp claws like cats and huge curved fangs, Their wailing calls, which are probably hunger screams, can be heard for very long distances.

"Hab SoSil' Quch!" [Translation from the Klingon: "Your mother has a smooth forehead!"] This is a very, very powerful insult to say to a Klingon, definitely fighting words. Never, ever say this to anyone but an enemy.

The Klingon government is traditionally a feudal monarchy, but the real power rests with the Klingon High Council and the Chancellor of that body.

The Klingon homeworld is Qo'noS, or more commonly known as Kronos. Green in color with a large single land mass, it is the major planet of the Klingon Empire and the site of the Imperial Empire's capital, the marvelous First City.

Qo'noS has a severely tilted axis that causes wild seasonal changes, a turbulent atmosphere and extremes of both warm and cold weather, although it is more often warm and most Klingons prefer warm, even hot weather. Qo'noS is a class M planet, but the atmosphere does contain methane gas, some regions having more methane than others.

The Klingons had an infamous underground prison colony on the frigid subzero planetoid Rura Penthe where the prisoners mined dilithium. Captain James Kirk and Doctor Leonard Mc Coy were unjustly sent to Rura Penthe, meeting a villainous female shape shifter there who called herself Martia. All the Klingon ships are impressive. One of the most popular is the high speed and agile Bird Of Prey. [The design of the Bird Of Prey was first conceived by Leonard Nimoy.]

The majestic capital city remained neutral to both sides during the empire's Civil War, and even to the houses of Sela and Movar. Below is the Great Hall.

According to legend, Kortar, the "first" Klingon, and his mate were created in a place called QI'tu'. The these two Klingons joined and were so immensely powerful that they destroyed the gods who made them and turned the heavens into ashes. This event is recounted in Klingon marriage ceremonies through the following, singular passage: "With fire and steel did the gods forge the Klingon heart. So fiercely did it beat, so loud was the sound, that the gods cried out, 'On this day we have brought forth the strongest heart in all the heavens. None can stand before it without trembling at its strength.' But then the Klingon heart weakened, its steady rhythm faltered and the gods said, 'Why do you weaken so? We have made you the strongest in all of creation.' And the heart said... 'I am alone.' And the gods knew that they had erred. So they went back to their forge and brought forth another heart. But the second heart beat stronger than the first, and the first was jealous of its power. Fortunately, the second heart was tempered by wisdom. 'If we join together, no force can stop us.' And when the two hearts began to beat together, they filled the heavens with a terrible sound. For the first time, the gods knew fear. They tried to flee, but it was too late. To this very day, no one can oppose the mighty beating of two Klingon hearts together.

Klingon honored dead are not mourned, but celebrated. The eyes of a dead warrior are left opened and all fellow Klingons present roar to tell the warriors in Sto'Vo'Kor that the warrior is joining them. The body of the dead warrior is viewed mainly as an empty shell to be disposed of; particularly well-respected warriors have their companions accompany the body for interment or disposal, "just" to keep away predators (though a privately held act of respect for the departed). Warriors who may have a question about whether they will be worthy to enter Sto'Vo'Kor, such as not having died in glorious battle, may have a dangerous quest held in their name by their surviving mate and his or her companions. If they win their stated deed or battle, they win honor for their late warrior and entry to paradise.

Klingon beliefs were recorded in a series of scrolls collectively referred to as the paq'batlh, or Book of Honor. One prophecy, possibly taken from this book, was of the Kuvah'magh, a religious figure predicted to appear at some future time. Miral Paris, daughter of Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres, was thought by some expatriate Klingon cult members in the Delta Quadrant to be this new spiritual leader.

Gre'Thor (in Klingon, ghe'tor or 'ghe''or) is the Klingon afterlife where the dishonored go when they die. It is the Klingon equivalent of hell and is guarded by a fearsome demon, Fek'lhr (roughly pronounced "Fek-Lar"; in Klingon, veqlargh). Those unfortunate Klingons who find themselves in Gre'Thor are faced with eternal torture by Fek'lhr and his demons; however, Klingon legend allows for souls to be saved from Gre'Thor, usually by heroic sacrifices performed by friends and family (Kahless, for example, once willingly journeyed to Gre'Thor to save his brother, Morath, and send him to Sto'Vo'Kor).

If a Klingon dies and is fated to journey to Gre'Thor, they will find themselves on the Barge of the Dead, which travels the "river of blood" on its way to Gre'Thor. Klingon souls on the Barge are tempted by siren-like voices, masquerading as friends and family, who try to lure them off the edge and into the river.

Under normal circumstances it is difficult for the souls of dead Klingons to leave Gre'Thor, as in the expression "I will surrender when spirits escape from Gre'Thor!", but the legend of Kahless does allow for such things. Another example is the mother of B'Elanna Torres, who was initially sent to Gre'Thor due to her daughter's misdeeds, but was eventually released. MoQbara [pronounced Mok'bara] was her name.

The above photo shows some types of Klingon common daggers and knives, including the very popular three-bladed d 'k tahg, and below other Klingon weapons designed to do a great deal of damage in combat. To steal a warrior's personal d 'k tahg is to insult his honor and likely will get you killed. There is also a Klingon spear, called a gin'tak. Klingons love to decorate beautiful weapons with carvings.

Klingon martial arts are often practiced with a bat 'leth, a very traditional and famous large Klingon weapon with a curved blade, four points and handholds on the back. The first bat 'leth was forged by Kahless The Unforgettable with his own hands. Klingon formal style of martial arts, practiced reverently with a bat 'leth, is similar to t'ai chi. Also, seen above the bat 'leth, is the mek 'leth.

Klingons are very passionate about their magnificent opera, which they use to combine battle with art. The opera 'u', retelling the legend of the battles of "Kahless The Unforgettable", is the first (real) Earth production of a Klingon opera. [See a sample of Kilngon Opera, performed in Berlin. Klingon warriors are known to keep all manner of interesting pets, including canines, felines, raptors, serpents,and especially targs [boar-like animals], fish, and other beasts. Their culture is filled with tales of devoted animals protecting their Klingon masters, going with them into battles. [Klingon captain Klurg took his faithful monster dog, his warrigul, with him on board his Bird Of Prey. Unfortunately, the proud warrigul was killed in a fight with a Federation star ship, which really pissed Klurg off.] Most Klingons believe that when their valiant pets depart their lives they go to Sto-Vo-Kor to be companions of warriors in the Black Fleet. Food is very important to Klingons. A well nourished warrior is in prime condition to fulfill his missions. The unique and spectacularly unusual Klingon food is largely composed of animal matter, raw or barely heated in sauces often composed of mixtures of blood or quickly deep fried in fat. Sometimes, meat is marinated and fermented. Klingons use many spices in preparing foods and flavors that are salty, very hotly seasoned, gamy and pungent are greatly appreciated. They don't consume processed sweets, such as sugary pastries. Fruits and vegetables may be added to sauces or as a garnish or are eaten raw, just as they are. Nuts are sometimes gnawed through their shells to the insides; the pits of fruit are sometimes eaten too. Klingons don't eat many eggs plain, but they add them with shells included to dishes for flavor enhancers and to add texture. However, they do relish the small eggs of the Tokvirian skink, eaten by the handful, as a snack, like Terrans eat popcorn. Klingons have many drinks, but don't drink water, which they consider to be a weak liquid, as they consider blood to be a strong liquid. Klingons greatly dislike bland food or food with no texture like the Terran's cream of wheat, plain rice or mashed potatoes. They eat with their fingers, quickly and noisily with much eager talking, hearty laughing and even very loud joyous singing. It's interesting to note that Worf liked Terran prune juice, chilled, considering it to be a warrior's drink.

Descriptions Of Some Klingon foods and drinks:

bahgol - A tea-like beverage that's deathly poisonous to humans, even toxic to Klingons, considered to be an additional test of a warrior's strength and best served warm. Klingons drink many types of tea [dargh] made of the dried stems, thorns and other parts of plants and even animal parts.
'Iw HIq - [bloodwine] - A very potent red wine of which Worf had programmed the replicators on the Enterprise-D to create a close approximation. It was also available at Quark's on Deep Space Nine. It is best served warm, and is the traditional beverage consumed by warriors being inducted into the Order of the Bat'leth. Blood wine is way too strong for most outworlders.

chech'tluth - A very strong alcoholic beverage Worf offered to Danilo Odell, the leader of a Bringloidi colony, when hosting that colony's population.
qul Dur - fire skin, made by soaking cut up pieces of animal skin, then removing them from the solution and setting them on fire before eating them. This treat is eaten quickly, while the pieces of skin are still flaming.
fire wine - Alcoholic beverage Worf once unsuccessfully tried to order in a fictional tavern in a holographic the American Old Wild West simulation.
gagh [pronounced "gaack"- with a long guttural sounding "a"] - serpent worms, being of various types. Klingons prefer to eat this gourmet treat live, saying it's tastiest then, although there's always the chance that the active gagh will attach themselves to your intestines so it's best to drink a good deal of a Klingon alcoholic beverage to thoroughly kill them inside you. To fully savor gagh it must be eaten quickly before the worms die and their delightful wiggling ceases .

Station personnel who were fond of the beverage included Commander Benjamin Sisko and Major Kira Nerys, who liked hers extra hot with two measures of kava, a flavorful root grown on her native planet Bajor. Quark served raktajino in special purple ceramic mugs.
rokeg blood pie - A traditional Klingon dish. The rokeg is somewhat like a huge Terran crocodile which can grow up to twenty feet long. The crew of the Pagh served it to William Riker when he briefly served aboard that vessel, as a sort of initiation rite. Riker proved his mettle by stating that he enjoyed it. It is also a favorite food of Worf's, whose adoptive mother mastered the technique of making it when he was a child.

skull stew - Delicacy sold at the Replimat on Deep Space Nine. The dish's name was not mentioned onscreen, though a photo of it, created by scenic artist Doug Drexler, was seen on a Replimat wall.

lingta - Makes a good lo mein, but Klingons know it mainly for it's ability to draw flies when it's dead. Doctor Bashir observed that it tasted like polymer, but Worf remarked that it was delicious..
